Hunter unemployment first item on agenda

Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Jodie Harrison, has used the first opportunity in the NSW Parliament to draw attention to the Liberal Government’s failure to address the unacceptably high levels of unemployment in the Hunter.

Unemployment in the Hunter has more than doubled under the Liberal Government, rising from 5.8% in 2011 to 12.8% in March 2015. The Hunter has fared worse than other regional areas, where average unemployment has risen from 5.9% to 8.3% in the past 4 years.

“Unemployment in the Hunter has doubled under the Liberal Government,” Ms Harrison said.

“These numbers represent 17 000 people in the Hunter without work, and the NSW Government has no plan to get people into ongoing employment.” Ms Harrison said.

“Mike Baird’s Government has no plan to help Hunter locals get back to work, “Ms Harrison said.

“Mike Baird needs to end his Sydney focus and commit to addressing regional unemployment, especially in the Hunter”
