Jodie Condemns Berejiklian Government's Failures in Tragic Child Care Death

17 October 2019

Labors Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Learning, Jodie Harrison has condemned the Berejiklian/Barilaro Government for its inaction over years which resulted in the death of a six month old baby boy at a Family Day Care service earlier this year.

The Kidstart Family Day Care Centre, where the baby died, had been assessed as Working Towards National Quality Standards in 2015. In 2016, the NSW Auditor General supported the timeframes for re-assessment in the national guidelines at the time.

Ms Harrison said that if the national guideline timeframes had been adopted by the Government, the Kidstart Family Day Care Centre at Randwick would have been re-assessed within 12 months of its Working Towards assessment in 2015.

The Kidstart Family Day Care service was last assessed under the National Quality Standards on 15 July 2015 over four years ago and had not been assessed since, she said.

This is totally unacceptable - it has resulted in the death of a child and I condemn this Government for allowing such a tragic incident to occur because of its inaction to ensure Kidstart Family Day Care was a safe place for children.
