OUR PLAN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

12 March 2019

NSW doesn't have another 4 years to waste to take real action on climate change & to arrest the biodiversity crisis in the state. The Liberals dont believe in climate change. Jodie Harrison and Labor do.

CLIMATE CHANGE PLAN:

Deliver at least 50%of our states energy from renewable sources by 2030;
Deliver 100% renewable energy for all State Government agencies by 2025;
Hold a Climate Change Summit in our first year in office;
Develop the Climate Change Action Plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050;
Deliver the single biggest investment in renewable energy in NSW history, creating 13,000 regional jobs;
Help an additional 500,000 homes install rooftop solar panels;
Reduce greenhouse gas emission by 15 million tonnes - the equivalent of offsetting every car in NSW;
Establish a state-owned power company to drive down power prices and deliver cheaper and cleaner power; and
Enshrine the outcomes of the Summit into a Climate Change Act.

BAN SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAGS

In Government, Labor will ban the bag and look at all options to reduce plastic pollution to ensure our environment is cleaner, healthier, and safer for us all and that includes our precious native animals.

PLANT 6 MILLION TREES BY 2030

Labor will invest $50 million over the next four years to deliver more green spaces across greater Sydney. Labors investment will fund programs including:

Tree planting and preservation;
Planning to protect trees and enhance the tree canopy; and
Land acquisition for environmental, social and recreational uses.

DOUBLE FUNDING FOR LANDCARE

Charlestown is an electorate abundant with beautiful natural environment. Jodie Harrison is passionate about supporting local Landcare groups, such as Lake Mac Landcare and Fern Creek Gully Landcare. Labor will double current funding to Landcare to deploy more front line and regional co-ordinators.

STRENGTHEN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS

Labor will review the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (NSW) to:

Ensure it is providing adequate protection for our environment; and
Fully recognise the benefits to the community which come from green spaces, trees, healthy waterways and local heritage.

END WAR ON CYCLISTS

Unfortunately due to the failure of the NSW Liberals/Nationals to invest in cycling infrastructure, cycling participation rates have declined and are now lower than they were in 2011. A NSW Labor Government will allocate $412 million in its first term to encourage cycling and walking to make it easier for people to commute to work, and school and to cycle for leisure.

ABOLISH FEES FOR AMATEUR BEE KEEPERS

Bees are responsible for the pollination of approximately 30% of NSW grown produce. Without bees pollination would be artificial, adding significant production costs to food and fibre in NSW. Beekeeper associations are concerned that fees imposed by the Berejkilian Government discourage people (anywhere up to 50% of hives) from registering. A Daley Labor Government will introduce free registration for amateur beekeepers with less than five hives in recognition of the value and contribution of bees to the environment and food production.
